The new year always encourages people to get a clean start. Everyone feels rejuvenated after winter holidays and ready to make changes. Decluttering, organizing and cleaning are the top three activities in the early days of January both at home and in the workplace. People can be good at simple cleaning tasks like organizing and storing papers, emptying trash, and even wiping down the work surface, but there are many overlooked items in the workplace that need to be cleaned more frequently. Consider cleaning these three items as you start the year fresh.
Computer Monitor
All computer equipment is a magnet for dust, lint and oils, but the freestanding monitor is overlooked because it is so infrequently touched. However, it is still affected by crumbs, dust, hairspray, perfume and airborne moisture. To eliminate these issues, simply grab a soft, lint-free cloth, a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water in a spray bottle, lightly spray the cloth with the solution and wipe the monitor clean. Repeat as needed to remove tough dirt and grime, remembering to use as little solution as possible to avoid damaging the electronics.
Keyboard
Many are aware that keyboards contain a lot of dirt and germs but are not sure how to go about cleaning them. The first step would be to use a can of compressed air to blow away any particles that might be hiding under and between the keys. Next, take the same type of lint-free cloth and cleaning solution that was used to clean the monitor to gently wipe down the keyboard. Finally, if there are stubborn spots, a cotton swab can be used to clean small areas or between the keys more precisely.
Coffee Station
While rarely at a personal workstation, many people use the coffee pot daily and sometimes multiple times per day for the caffeine fix they need to focus on their work. Some offices also have coffee cups and spoons available for use. These items also need to be cleaned regularly. Dishes are the easiest with hot, soapy water, but it takes a little more effort to get the coffee pot clean. Most coffee pots involve a pot of vinegar followed by multiple pots of distilled water to clean all the components. Some also need a toothpick or cotton swab to clean the bottom of the basket to allow coffee to flow better. If there are any questions about cleaning a specific brand of coffee maker, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or recommendations.
