Flooring is an often overlooked area that needs frequent cleaning. Commercial buildings have multiple types of flooring such as non-slip, terrazzo, hardwood, and carpet. Each of these four flooring styles requires special care.
A non-slip floor is common in commercial kitchens or other places where floors might routinely become wet to reduce the risk of slipping. These floors are durable and tough and can seem harder to clean due to their texture. The first step is to remove all dirt with a vacuum, broom, or soft brush. There are special, concentrated cleaning products that are required for non-slip flooring. Use the included product instructions to prepare the cleaner. Proper dilution is necessary for effective cleaning. If it is too strong, it may degrade the floor, and if it is too weak, it will not provide proper cleansing. Once you have the proper dilution, use a hard-bristled brush to work the cleaning product into the crevices of the flooring. Some cleaners need to be rinsed after use, and others do not. Refer to product instructions on how to handle the floors after cleaning and set up proper signage so employees know to avoid that area until it is completely dry.
Terrazzo floors were created by stone masons in the Venetian period by pressing chips of marble into a layer of cement resulting in a speckled appearance. Terrazzo is a remarkably resilient material, but still requires some specific care. Clean spills immediately to avoid stains setting into the pores of the stone. Avoid acidic products like vinegar or abrasives like harsh scrubbing products. Use a damp mop with a neutral cleaner followed by a damp mop with no cleaner weekly to keep your floors clean.
Hardwood floors have become a highly desirable material for flooring due to their ease of cleaning and aesthetic appeal. However, they also need a certain amount of care to keep them looking their best. They should be vacuumed regularly to avoid fine grit and dust accumulating and grinding into the finish and wood. Hardwood should have limited exposure to moisture and spills should always be cleaned up immediately. Invest in an elongated doormat to reduce the tracking of dirt and debris inside and onto the floors. Consider area rugs for the same reason as an elongated doormat to protect your floors. Finally, research any wax or restorer you may be considering using to avoid ruining the finish on your hardwood floors.
Carpet is found in commercial and residential properties and can look good, but the upkeep can be frustrating. Carpet captures dirt and particles and can stain easily. Spot treat stains immediately with a damp cloth and mild detergent solution for synthetic fiber carpet or a lukewarm water and vinegar solution for natural fibers. Vacuum regularly to avoid unsightly clumps of dirt and debris.
