Cleaning Tile and Grout

It’s fairly easy to clean tile and grout yourself.  Here are a few tips that will save you money.

Grout can be difficult to clean and to keep clean, but you can do-it-yourself if you know what to do. Most big box stores carry grout cleaners or you can purchase from a tile dealer. Make sure you use non-acidic cleaners. Acids cause erosion and can scratch. Vinegar and bleach are also not recommended. Use a pH balanced grout cleaner followed by a sealer.

  • First, sweep or vacuum the tile floor thoroughly.
  • Wash the floor with hot, soapy water.
  • When the floor is dry, begin by cleaning the grout one small area at a time.

Spray-on cleaners are easy to use. You’ll see a big difference once the cleaner begins to work. You can also use a scrub brush or an old toothbrush for deep cleaning.  Once the cleaner has done its job, wipe dirt and debris away with fresh, clean water.

For super dirty grout, pre-treat with baking soda and water. Make a paste and apply to the stained areas. Allow it to sit overnight. Rinse thoroughly. When the grout and floor are completely dry, you’ll be amazed. The stain will be gone.

Keep your floor looking fresh and clean by using a silicone-based grout sealer to seal in the beauty.  This  will protect the grout from stains for up to 2 years.
